Job Summary

Reporting to the Manager, Transportation Planning, you will be an integral member of the transportation planning group responsible for coordinating and managing various transportation planning studies and the review of development-related transportation studies made under the Planning Act, including official plan amendments, secondary plans, plans of subdivision, zoning by-law amendments, and site plans.

As a Transportation Engineer, you will ensure compliance with all applicable City standards and design criteria for roadway designs, as you coordinate with all parties associated with development applications, including developers, consultants, planners, lawyers, architects, and other City departments, and conduct technical investigations, analyses, surveys and research to resolve complex transportation problems. Providing technical recommendations based on your site reviews, preparing budgets for consulting services, and managing long-range strategic planning studies in accordance with the City of Markham vision will be among your key areas of responsibility. A skilled communicator, you will also prepare reports, briefing notes, and presentations, respond to queries, and represent the City at meetings with the public and stakeholders, and at the Local Planning Appeal Tribunal/Ontario Municipal Board, court proceedings and other tribunals.

Requirements

Licensing as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in the Province of Ontario, in good standing, with a university degree in Civil Engineering and a minimum of 5 years of experience in transportation planning and/or engineering.
Proven understanding of various transportation planning and traffic engineering theories.
Familiarity with travel demand forecasting and thorough understanding of transportation-related software packages (e.g., HCS, CCG, Emme, Synchro/SimTraffic).
Proficiency in the use of general computer software, including Microsoft Windows 10, Outlook Express, Excel and Word.
Ability to work effectively with developers, consultants, contractors, elected officials, and other internal and external clients and stakeholders.
Highly developed personal, interpersonal, presentation and teamwork skills, with the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with all organizational levels.
Ability to attend meetings at various locations throughout Markham and the Region, during and outside regular business hours.
Familiarity with safety on construction sites and near roadways.
A valid Ontario Driver’s Licence – Class G and access to a personal vehicle for business purposes.
