The Mobility Strategies unit of City Planning are seeking a Transportation Project Engineer who can adapt quickly to change, be innovative, and have a vision for what sustainable urban mobility looks like as Edmonton moves from 1 million to 2 million people. As a Transportation Project Engineer, this position will support policy development and city planning by ensuring that mobility and land-use planning are integrated to better achieve City Council’s Strategic Goals. The Transportation Project Engineer will work on projects such as city-wide mobility network analysis, mass transit implementation, active modes planning, and assist with implementation of The City Plan.

  • Support the development of complex, strategic engineering and related studies for planning and assessment of the City’s multi-modal transportation network development
  • Develop, manage and analyze transportation network geospatial data and create network maps for planning and monitoring purposes
  • Review engineering design drawings and technical reports from a policy perspective
  • Apply municipal, provincial, national and international engineering design guidelines and standards
  • Understand and interpret transportation demand model outputs including Emme, Synchro, or Vissim models
  • Communicate the outcomes of a project or task for both technical and nontechnical audiences
  • Lead and manage smaller scale mobility and related studies including:
    – Plan project tasks and identify timelines and resource requirements
    – Organize project meetings and document communications
    – Manage and control project timelines, costs and quality
  • Represent the perspective of the section and branch on projects lead by groups outside of branch and on any inter-department or inter-agency committees and focus groups 
  • Assist in drafting council reports including report plans, presentations and attachments
  • Respond to inquiries received from the public and other City groups and Council
  • Perform other related duties as required


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering with coursework in Transportation Engineering, Transportation Planning, Land Use Planning, or Urban Planning
  • Minimum 4 years progressively responsible experience in Transportation Engineering, Transportation Planning and/or policy strategy development is required
  • Registered as a P.Eng with APEGA or with the Professional Engineering Association of another province/territory of Canada
  • Ability to manage external consultants and the capacity to develop and lead teams to obtain results
  • Strong project management skills, and prioritization skills including the ability to produce results in a changing environment
  • Knowledge of transportation with regards to the movement of people and goods and familiarity with transportation design, guidelines, and principles, City Bylaws, Servicing Standards, procedures and specifications
  • Demonstrated understanding of the competing forces in building mobility and land use
  • Exceptionally strong communication (both written and verbal) with the ability to collaborate, present materials and make recommendations to various audiences
  • Proficient in the use of Google Applications (gmail, docs, slides, my maps) is required
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve results in the context of a respectful, inclusive and service-minded style

  • Assets:
    – A Master’s Degree in Transportation Engineering, Transportation Planning, Land Use Planning, Urban Planning or a related discipline
    – Experience developing, managing and analyzing geospatial data and creating maps for planning and monitoring purposes through geographic information systems such as ArcGIS

Salary: $73,738 – $105,340 (Annually)
