Calgary’s Next 20 – project update
The City of Calgary is undertaking a review of its Municipal Development Plan (MDP) and Calgary Transportation Plan (CTP). These long-range plans contribute to many aspects of civic life. The city we experience today—the places we live and work, parks and recreational facilities we enjoy, amenities in our neighbourhoods, public transit, roads, bridges, sidewalks and pathways—is a result of decades of planning for tomorrow.
Our city has changed since these plans were approved in 2009. Factors such as population trends, including an increasingly diverse population, a larger percentage of newcomers, and an aging population; technology trends including a growing shared-economy and automation in the workplace and transportation; and the impacts of climate change resulting in extreme weather events, droughts and air quality issues like we saw in Calgary last summer, will have a growing impact on where and how people live, work, and get around the city.
Our review of the MDP and CTP will take into account these trends and focus on the policy changes and updates needed to make Calgary better for more people over the next 20 years, leading to the project name – Next 20. This presentation will provide an overview of the project and update on current status, as well as how ITE members can provide input going forward.
