ITE Southern Alberta Luncheon – To Peer Review or not to Peer Review … That is the Question!

April 11, 2019 @ 11:30 am - 1:30 pm

$10 – $400

To Peer Review or not to Peer Review … That is the Question!

Do you know the difference between a “peer” review and a “staff” review?  Do you know that they are different and why you need to know the difference?  This presentation provides an overview of what each type of review is and is not.  The presenter’s experience over the past 30 years as both reviewer and reviewee has demonstrated that there is a lack of understanding of what peer reviews are (and not) by professional engineers in both British Columbia and in Alberta.

Because the term “peer review” raises questions about the technical validity of the work being reviewed, it is critical to ensure that the review is conducted in a professional and transparent manner by a qualified reviewer.  Ensuring good process allows all parties – the engineer-of-record, the reviewing agency and the peer reviewer to have open dialogue to deliver a positive outcome of the review.  As part of the presentation, a Top 10 list of what to include in a peer review and a Top 10 List of what to include in a staff review will be provided as a useful checklist.
