Student Chapters - University of Waterloo

The University of Waterloo student chapter was established almost 35 years ago as the first Student Chapter in the Canadian District. The UW student chapter is run by the executive committee under supervision of the Chapter Faculty Advisor. The executive committee is elected by the student members annually.

Currently, our membership consists of 35 students most of which are graduate students. Our membership is growing rapidly as the transportation engineering program at the University of Waterloo is expanding. The main objective of our student chapter is to attract students to the profession of transportation engineering and keep our members updated about the existing opportunities in the industry and academia. Activities of our student chapter can be categorized into 5 groups namely: holding seminars, attending conferences, holding social events, participating in events of the ITE community, and undergraduate activities.

The UW student chapter organizes seminars each school term from the broad spectrum of transportation engineering areas, such as road safety, pavement design, transit planning, traffic engineering, and winter maintenance.  Our members are quite active in transportation research and have presented their work in conferences such as TRB, TAC, International ITE, and CITE conferences.  The student chapter also funds events such as Grad House lunch/dinners, paintball, and bowling to allow for social bonding within the local university transportation research community.  We also participate within the broader transportation community through such projects as the ITE data collection grants, conducting parking and trip generation surveys. The UW is active in exposing undergraduate students to transportation engineering through seminar talks to undergraduate students.
