The Canadian Guide to Neighbourhood Traffic Calming

Jointly developed by the Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) and CITE, this document presents guidelines for the planning, design and implementation of traffic calming measures. The Guide focusses on traffic calming measures for local and collector streets within established urban residential areas and is primarily oriented towards retrofit situations. Consistency, liability and safety concerns often expressed by the transportation engineering community are addressed.

The following information is presented within the guide:

  • The role of traffic calming in transportation planning and neighborhood planning;
  • A discussion of the issues related to designing and implementing traffic calming plans;
  • A recommended process for involving the community in the development of a traffic calming plan;
  • Traffic calming measures, their benefits and applicability; and design-related guidelines.
