The Canadian
Institute of Transportation Engineers (CITE) is composed of
more than 1,200 transportation engineers, planners,
technologists and students across Canada. CITE, or District
7, is an integral part of the
Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) which
consists of more than 13,000 transportation professionals in
more than 70 countries. These transportation professionals
are responsible for the safe and efficient movement of
people and goods on streets, highways and transit systems.

This year
holds some exciting new initiatives from CITE. The CITE
Executive is working hard to bring information and ideas to
CITE members. We are strengthening our ties to ITE
International on a number of fronts including training
courses, funding for special projects and representation on
key ITE committees. As always, we welcome suggestions for
areas we can improve in our services to members.

Calling
All Volunteers!
Like most of
us, your life is filled with new work and personal
challenges, and you are busier than ever. So why volunteer
for CITE activities? Ultimately, it’s a very personal
decision to contribute your time, but there are many
different reasons for doing so, including:
·
Opportunity
to meet other people in the industry
·
Learn more
about the organization (Perhaps a trial run prior to
considering an Executive position?)
·
Contribute to
technical projects
·
Personal and
professional growth
·
Make a
difference in an industry that you are passionate about.
The
last point is critical to our organization. Membership in
ITE is by individuals rather than companies or agencies. In
order to be successful it requires individual members who
are passionate about their work, and desire to make a
difference through their volunteer efforts.
It should be
noted that most volunteer positions come with a time limit
of two years, and a commitment of 2-4 hours per month.
Also, most of these positions come with travel funding so
that members have an opportunity to meet face-to-face during
the course of the year.
If you are
one of those people that feel they just don’t have enough
experience to contribute, please reconsider! CITE needs new
people to become active in the organization and your
participation is valued. Alternatively, if you have
completed a previous mandate (such as a past Section
President), we would welcome your continued involvement in
the organization. You can choose to either put your name
forward to assist on a specific committee, or we will find a
volunteer position that fits your needs and schedule.
To be
considered for a volunteer position, please submit your
name, resume and the position being sought to the CITE
Vice-President at
vicepresident@cite7.org, or contact any member of the
District 7 Executive.
